I've been working out at Extreme Fitness on their 30 day trial. But the 30 day trial expires next week and I need to make a decision about whether or not I'll stay.
I've been really enjoying the hot yoga and conditioning and pilates classes I've been taking there. But what I really don't enjoy is getting locked in to one-year contract. It leaves me with no flexibility to leave the country, move to another part of town, or else be stuck paying a huge fee every month for something I won't be using.
The plan I have costs 60 dollars a month. Do any of you Torontonians go to gyms that are cheaper/have a pay as you go system that also provide good classes? Bonus points for places that's not too far from the downtown core.
TIA!

Hey guys. I've been super stressed lately and I am wanting to get a massage sometime soon. (A legit massage, not the OTHER kind...) I'm wondering if you guys could recommend a place/person that's in an easily accessible area and a reasonable price. Thanks!

Wonderful people of Toronto!
As a friend and I were walking home tonight we found a dog playing in traffic on Ossington near Hallam. He is a tiny little white curly-haired dog wearing a leopard print collar with no tags. My friends have taken him to the 24hr VEC to see if he's microchipped, but just in case he's not I'm posting here.
Please help this little guy find his way back home.
Edit: FOUND! His owner answered my craigslist ad.

Hello all,
I haven't had a bike since I was 16 and am interested in getting a used retro looking womens cruiser bike for around $150. I've been checking craigslist daily and haven't had any luck. Does anyone have any leads or places they'd recommend looking? Downtown core preferred and I'm 5'6" if that helps.
Thank you kindly.
Please help a poor girl get a stylish bike to get around the city :)

Some fellow Toronto comm. LJers and myself are curious as to if there are any bars out there (down/midtown) that will be airing the Lost finale 'cause we'd love to have a Lost party to enjoy (cry/scream/agonize over) the ending of our beloved show.
Thanks!

Hey Toronto,
Remember that time you bought that high-larious penis cake mold for your friend's bachelorette party, (or birthday, or coming out party, or Tuesday night dinner - because who doesn't love cock cake?)... but then you realized this actually isn't the most versatile of baking tins (because as it turns out, not everyone does love cock cake), and now it's just kinda sitting around reminiscing about the glory days?
If so, I'd love to take it off your hands so I too can embarrass my friend with her very own penis shaped birthday cake without having to pay full price for something I'm really not going to use that much.
So, anyone looking to offload?
Thanks!
ps - I can live with a cupcake pan, but I'd prefer a cake pan. Yeah yeah, size queen and all that....

Morning all, I am wondering if any of you fine people know where I can buy black roses, or even dark purple ones. I know that Northbound Leather has leather ones which I might consider, but if I can get a real flower I think I would prefer that. It would also be super if it was somewhere near the downtown core. I do not have the situational ability to make one myself, so that's why I'd like one pre made.
Thanks.

Hey guys,
Sorry if this has been asked! Just wondering where the cheapest place is to get my ink cartridge refilled. The printer is a Xerox Phaser 6180 and Ink Cartridge replacements for these are exxxxpppeensssive! http://www.office.xerox.com/printers/color-printers/phaser-6180/supl-enus.html ($94.99 US... I think I saw them as $129 CAD + tax + shipping).
I figure it'd be cheaper to just get the cartridges refilled. So Toronto, any suggestions on cheap, reliable places?
Thanks!

Does anyone in this community listen to ska?
I've been in the city for about 5 months now and am just now starting to find time for my interests and have discovered tonnnns of ska related events (and other awesome live shows!) in the city but I've haven't met anyone here yet who appreciates live music enough to check these events out. I've tried 4thwave.ca and the GTA Ska group on facebook, however both are infrequently used. If anyone's looking for a ska show buddy or a show buddy in general I'm open to most types of music!
Cheers,
_M

Hi Toronto!
I'm thinking of starting back into singing lessons again. I took them for five years... um... ten years ago (I can't believe it's been that long) and stopped when I moved to town for school. I had a great vocal teacher in North Bay, but feel lost and overwhelmed now that I'm here and looking for someone new.
I would say I'm at... a rusty intermediate level with my singing. I need to get whipped back into shape, and also need help expanding my range and strengthening my voice. I want someone who can teach beyond a beginner stage, but who can help me with the fact that I'm totally out of condition now.
I am interested specifically in someone who teaches musical theatre-style singing. I'm not interested in opera or rock and anything else. I don't care about doing RCM exams (though I have done some) -- I do this purely recreationally.
I don't have a lot of money so that's a bit of a consideration. Though I would rather go to someone very good bi-weekly than someone less good on a weekly basis, if it comes to that.
If anyone has any recommendations, it would be much appreciated!

Are you effing sh*%&ing me?
TTC driver suspended (with pay) after license pulled
Okay, so she wasn't CHARGED with a DUI, but still...the driver had enough alcohol to have their license suspended for three days. That's too much, if you ask me, especially when the care and safety of that many people is involved.
I don't want this mistaken this for another "let's all bash the TTC" post...but I mean, what in the world is going on with those people lately? Okay fine, people make mistakes...yadda yadda yadda...but to suspend someone WITH pay is practically REWARDING this bad behaviour.

Hello Toronto :)
Does anyone know where I can find Macbook power cord at an affordable price? The Apple store is ridiculous! Are there any reliable stores where I can purchase one from?
Or does anyone have a spare one that they're willing to part with?
I'm looking for a 60W power cord for a 13.3" Macbook.
Thanks so much!!

Hi good folks of Toronto,
I'm an artist, and I've really been focusing on marketing myself this year for the first time since (fiiinally, argh!) finishing university.
Though I mostly paint my own stuff, I've done pet portraits off and on. I want to start putting this type of work out there more and was hoping to exhibit at some pet-related shows and events. I've searched around online, and know about the All About Pets Show (for which I'm too late to apply this year) and the PIJAC show (which is industry-only), but I was wondering if there were any smaller events that wouldn't be so hard on the wallet that I could still get into for this year.
If anyone knows of anything coming up for which a pet portraiture display would be a good fit, I would really appreciate some info on it!
Thanks very much in advance!

Where do I find an eyeglass chain in this fair city?
Do dollar stores stock them? (If they do, which ones? I've tried a couple, no joy.) Optometrists? Would I find some in Shopper's or Walmart?
I just want a cheap, plain, fabric chain: I'm going to be doing some work on a 21-foot ladder for the first time since I've started wearing glasses, and I'm terrified that I'll be clumsy and lose them otherwise.

OK, people of Toronto, I desperately need your help. I fell on some stairs in a mall parking lot because they were not maintained properly and now may have broken my ankle. I'm looking into suing the management company for negligence as the stairs are really in rough shape and I'm not really able to get around much right now because crutches are very difficult for me to use.
So my fellow LJers, I ask of you your recommendations for a good personal injury lawyer who would preferably not charge much or anything up front as I am very broke right now. I know I can google this, but I would really like some personal references of lawyers you have used as I have never had to hire a lawyer before.
Thanks so much, I love this community so much for all the great help it offers. You guys ROCK!! :D

Hello T.O.!
My 30th birthday is in 3 months.
My dear wonderful Husband is *supposed* to be planning it, but I thought seeing as there has been no movement on that front, I will be a good wife and help him along.
Being a HUGE fan of all the cool cake shows on T.V. right now, and we both watch them Sunday nights....I would like to have a very cool funky cake. Had cupcakes for my wedding, but I want a cool cake for my birthday.
However, I'd rather it not be $1,000 min, which is something like Ace of Cakes min (not that I could get one of theirs as they are not in Toronto or Canada).
My budget is small (no real number, but I anticipate it to be small).
Is there somewhere in Toronto that I can get a really funky cool cake for an inexpensive price. Not looking for a wedding cake, something small only like 20 or less people are going to be there, but I want something interesting.
Possible themes for my birthday will be 80's, pirates, or if my Husband has his way...killer whales (my #1 fear).
Thanks for the help!

My boyfriend and I are looking to buy an antique or at least antique-looking couch. We wandered through Leslieville yesterday, and the shops had many chairs and cabinets and that sort of thing, but not much in the way of couches. We're thinking we'll check out some of the bigger antique stores, but those are all out of our way, so I'm hoping to get recommendations.
( Click to see the sort of couches we're interested in )
Anyone know where in Toronto we're likely to find a decent selection of couches in that or a similar style? Or, failing that, a store that makes new couches in that sort of style, but is reasonably-priced. (I know there's some lovely looking ones at The Art Shoppe, for example, but most of the furniture there is out of our price range.)
Thanks in advance!

I'm working on a certain problem, and I need to know more about the discrete Galton-Watson birth/death process. Say, start with one creature at step 0. It lays N eggs and then dies. Each egg has independent probability 1/N of producing a viable hatchling, and then each hatchling grows up and lays N eggs of its own, and so on.
Alright. The question is this - and textbooks don't seem to cover it, so I'm not sure how much is known about it:
Given that M creatures are alive in generation n, how closely related do we expect them to be? If M and n aren't too large compared to N, is there at least a decent chance that at least, say, M/100 eggs from the first generation had surviving descendants in generation n?
Most "limiting distribution" theorems I see in the literature aren't about genealogical distributions; they're results of the type "Given that generation n+k was not extinct, the size of generation n is distributed as so and so".

I hope you're all planning to come to Meatout this year! We've (me, Sarah, Becca, Nat, Ian, Laura) been working our butts off for this event and it's going to be amazing. RSVP to info@libertyoverviolence.ca to reserve your spot + goody bag and to save a few bucks on admission $12 at the door. I'm going to be cooking/baking like mad this weekend and it's all going to be tastylicious! Note that this is not a potluck. You just show up, pay up and chow down. The raffle prizes we've been collecting are pretty darned sweet as are the goody bags. If you're not from Toronto, check out this site for a list of Meatout events in your area.

Greetings Torontonians,
I'm following up on a couple leads I found from Google, but I wanted to tap my very favourite knowledge base for specific references for an Ergonomics Specialist who will come into your office to help assess your workstation and properly configure your desk. Does anyone know
a) of a company that does this, and b) approximately how much this service costs?
I'm not asking for a company-wide thing, just someone to help ME specifically with my desk.
Help me...I'm in so much pain and I'm getting frequent migraines now.
Kindest thanks,
Yvonne PS: Yes I know I can find a wealth of ergonomics resources online and do it myself, but I've done that and it doesn't seem to help. I'm hoping that a specialist will address my specific physical needs.

Edit: Delivered to the first taker! Would have loved to have spread them around -- sorry other folks -- but that's more legwork than I'm up for. :)
I helped out with promotions a few years ago for an Ani DiFranco show (which was around the time she released Knuckle Down -- 2005ish?).
I've been cleaning up my apartment, and found a stack of posters that were used to promote her show here.
They're fairly plain, but pretty! Ivory background, nice black and white photo. Roughly 11" x 17".
I don't want to keep storing them, but I really don't want to toss them. If someone here wants them, and wants to come get them from me, I'll give them to you! If you have other Ani-loving friends you can share them with, bonus, since there are at least 15 of them.

Edit: SOLD and delivered!
I have a Speedball fabric screenpriting kit that I would like to find a new home for!
Includes: -screen -squeegee for screen -photo emulsion (with activator) -drawing fluid -screen filler -red ink -yellow ink -black ink -instructions
I'm also throwing in: -three women's small (though they fit like medium) babydoll tees in solid colours that you can experiment on! -possibly a jar of white ink if I can remember where I put it!
I got rid of the box a long time ago, but I still have everything that came in it. At some point, I opened the red and black ink jars to play with the ink a little, but they're at least 2/3 full and still totally usable. The screen has a red stain in one area where I was playing with some pigment, but it's been thoroughly cleaned and shouldn't affect its performance at all.
Usually retails around $50. I'm asking $20 OBO, and throwing in the shirts (and maybe extra ink)!
Meet-up is anywhere between St. Clair & Bathurst and Bloor & Bathurst, or else on the University subway line.
